One Good Deed

retold by Riley

It had been days since the eagle’s last meal. Suddenly, he saw a serpent sunbathing on the rocks below him. “Perfect,” the eagle figured, “just the thing to satisfy the gnawing in my stomach.” The snake, who noticed the eagle before the eagle spotted him, had amazing reflexes, and as soon as the eagle swooped down to grab him, he darted out of the way and soon a great battle had begun.

A countryman came along, and he quickly spotted the tangle of feathers and scales. The countryman, who loved eagles, jumped in and fought as if he were fighting for himself, not a bird. The agile countryman was able to separate the two enemies. The serpent, seething with anger, spat some venom into the countryman’s cup, and slithered into the darkness.

The countryman, parched from fighting, grabbed his flask, and prepared to take a nice long drink, when suddenly he heard a piercing scream form above. He looked up and spied the eagle, who was coming toward him at lightning speed. The eagle hit the countryman’s flask, spilling the contents everywhere.

DESERVES ANOTHER
