retold by Riley
After conquering Asia Minor, Alexander continued on towards Persia, stopping in Gordium. In the center of town he came upon a bulging knot, which tied an oxcart to a pole. An ancient legend stated that whoever could unite the knot would reign over all of Asia. Alexander was determined to find a way to untie the knot, and rapidly searched his brain for an answer. Soon, he emerged with a plan on how to solve the ancient puzzle. All the townspeople gathered around to see how this hero would attempt to untie the knot. Everyone held their breath as Alexander drew his sword and cut the knot in two, therefore solving the ancient riddle. Whether the legend was true …or not, Alexander did conquer all of Asia, and because of his great accomplishments, became known as Alexander the Great, Untier of the Gordian Knot.
