There were many formal activities in 1774. These proper affairs may seem strange compared to modern day events. Three that are interesting are weddings, dances, and fashion.

The first formal ceremony that is different is a wedding. As a sign of loyalty, women wore yellow dresses, not white. Also, cookies were made, then stacked on top of each other to serve guests instead of a fancy wedding cake. Another formal affair was a dance. Balls often went from afternoon until early the next morning. The minuet was always the first dance. The dances became more lively after that. Lastly, fashion was considered an art and a chore. Women wore corsets, silk slippers, hats and long gowns. Men wore short breeches with stockings, a shirt, collar, cravat, and overcoat.

1774 is much different than 2010. Modern day life is much more casual. I'm glad I don't live in the 18th century!
